It simply turned off the internal speaker after the fright I got when the music in lotus turbo 3 came pounding out that infernal speaker. The program on the disk installs a boot sector onto the disk in drive A. Simply reboot and it gives you the following options:- 1 - Disable the 68030's INSTRUCTION cache. 2 - Disable the 68030's DATA cache. 3 - Disable the 68030's MMU. 4 - Turn down volume of Falcons internal speaker. 5 - Quit and run a bootsector 6 - Quit and bypass hard drive. 7 - Quit and continue as normal. Sorry for the rather brief text in the bootsector but when you have got less than 500 bytes to play around with, something has to go. Of course if something like this was built into the ROM (like in the A1200) then we would not have any problems with space ;) For best results try to leave both the caches switched on. Most ST games will need the MMU switched off(see below for problems). The sound chip will still cause problems but apart from modifying the game there are no solutions at the moment :( For some strange reason the operating system grinds to a halt when the MMU is disabled so its best to run boot disks like No second prize and hunter. If you do have to use GEM then moving the mouse will speed things up. The program won't work on any other machine, it does this by checking the cookie jar for a '_MCH' entry if present then a value of $30000 indicates that the machine is a falcon. How? Well the 68030 has a built in MMU which can be used to protect memory (essential when you are multi-tasking) but since most ST games like to grab all of the RAM the MMU gets a bit upset and the machine crashes. The new option toggle MMU allows you to overcome this. ****************************************************************************** Version 1.2 released - 02/05/1993 A small 'bugette' fixed and the option to turn either or both of the caches has been added. Disable speaker changed to turn down volume instead. This cannot be 'un done' by ST programs that poke the sound chip illegally.(unlike a straight disable of the speaker). ******************************************************************************
