DID YOU KNOW THAT...
by Richard Karsmakers
...this is ST NEWS Volume 6 Issue 1?
...it is the second 'undead' issue, and the 29th in total?
...it is almost completely dedicated to the ST NEWS International
Christmas Coding Convention, held in Holland just before
Christmas?
...it has been made ready fairly quickly, as we had sufficient
stuff to put on the disk for it?
...the music in this issue was done by The Mind of The
Quartermass Experiment?
...he is a new talent on the field of music, who deserves a
chance to have his incredible products spread all over the
globe (ahem)?
...he is Dutch?
...this is altogether even more remarkable?
...it was also quite handy because we lacked the energy to
continously and vigorously kick Jochen Hippel's ass to get
some music out of him?
...I have recently, by the way, also joined the elite fraternity
of the Quartermass Experiment?
...I am very proud of this, as my fellow members are all very
inspired people?
...the Coding Convention was a big success?
...over 120 people eventually turned up?
...each and every detail of the (sometimes shocking) truth can be
read in the real-time article elsewhere in this issue?
...the whole real-time department of this issue sums up to well
over 200 Kb of text?
...this is not bad for a mere 4.5 days of writing, especially if
one takes into consideration that we already thought we had
written quite a lot during the Norway Quest one year ago -
250 Kb, but in 10 days?
...we at ST NEWS are very proud at this new world record
(well... we have reason to believe it may be one)?
...someone at the Convention (a Frenchie, I think it was) paid me
with an OLD Dutch 100 guilder bill when he bought some
Thalion merchandise?
...I now have 100 Dutch guilders LOSS due to that?
...I can't exchange this bill anywhere (not even in Holland)?
...this ST NEWS disk does not contain as much actual documents as
you were used from us in the last couple of issues?
...you will, however, also notice a "PROGRAMS" folder that is
bulging with some interesting stuff?
..., for starters, all the 3.5 Kb demos are present in there?
...we are very proud of them (well....except maybe for TNS'
entry...)?
...there is also one of the 'big' demos on there?
...the winning 'big' demo, however, can be found on ULM's "Dark
Side of the Spoon" demo?
...this was written by Manikin and Oxygene of The Lost Boys - for
the sole purpose of pissing off Inner Circle?
...careful examination (well...maybe not too careful) will reveal
another folder that contains Jeff Minter's "Defender II"
demo?
...we got this with the compliments of Yak himself?
...the Convention as such was written about in several
international magazines?
...I am talking here about German "TOS", French "ST Magazin" and
Norwegian "ST Klubben"?
...this is very nice?
...I would like to continue this column with some of the stuff
you would 'normally' find here?
...there is some news about various utilities that have been
launched in new versions (or will be soon)?
..."Pinhed" is available now in version 1.8?
..."Fast Filemover" is now available in version 1.4.1?
..."First Word Plus" will soon be available as 3.20TT?
...I already tested a pre-version, which works fine?
...more info about this can be found in the next issue of ST
NEWS?
..."Turbo ST" now exists as version 1.82?
..."Pack Ice" now exists in 2.31, made in November 1990?
...Psygnosis is now also doing stuff on the Sega Megadrive?
...WJS Design (of Wayne Smithson) will be doing "Shadow of the
Beast"?
...Rob Povey (of "Quartet" and "Quartet II" fame) will also work
for WJS design soon (probably)?
...Psygnosis have done a compilation called "Monster Pack Volume
I"?
...it contains "Shadow of the Beast", "Nitro" and "Infestation"?
...it's nice?
...you should check out "Thrash Ranch" by Jersey Dogs, "Live in
Germany 1976" by Rainbow, "Time's Up" by Living Colour, "Left
Hand Path" by Entombed, "Cause of Death" (Bloody 'eavy!!!) by
Obituary, "The Return of the Knebworth Fayre" by Deep Purple
and "Arise" by Sepultura?
...you should also check out "Innuendo" by Queen?
..., even though everybody is buying this, it is pretty OK?
...Metallica is recording a new album?
...THIS IS OF COURSE THE BEST NEWS TO BE HEARD IN TWO YEARS?
...there are supposed to be twelve songs on this album (or it may
be that this is the amount of tracks they recorded, of which
some may be scrapped)?
...some of the song names are "Enter Sandman", "Sad but True",
"Through the Never", "Don't Tread on me" and "The Unforgiven"?
...it will not be produced by Flemming Rasmussen?
...an Italian label called Red Line is launching 'bootleg' CDs by
the dozen?
...stuff even includes Malmsteen, Metallica and of course lotsa
Deep Purple?
...the Deep Purple one (which I mentioned above) is VERY, VERY
GOOD?
...the Malmsteen one is a CD version of the concert featured on
the "Rising Force Live '85" video?
...the Metallica one is of loathsome quality?
...Metal Church also launched a new CD recently, called "The
Human Factor"?
...it is less 'heavy' on the production side, but OK as a whole?
...I have resigned at Thalion, so that I am 'free' again since
April 1st 1991?
...I will then live together permenantly with Miranda, and I will
study English at University in Utrecht again?
...I am looking forward to that very much?
...working at Thalion is very nice but living together with
Miranda in Holland is just nicer?
...my new address can be read in the column that explains the
ordering of merchandise, elsewhere in this issue?
...I am not 'free' entirely, as I will help a Dutch company
setting up a games magazine?
...I will quit there in the summer, so that I can go start
studying?
...a Thalion game has now been seen in English charts for the
first time (The ST charts of the May "ZERO")?
...it's "Enchanted Land", at number 9?
...Bullfrog, according to Electronic Arts, has not (yet) left
them to join Renegades?
...they will even soon do "Populous II" for EA?
...I recently had a look through old ST NEWS issues?
...it was touching, and sometimes I felt a lump in my throat?
...the older issues, I was shocked to establish, were a lot more
naive and 'fresh' than the current ones?
...I will strive to bring this element back somewhat in the
future?
...Atari has firmly cut prices recently?
...this means that the TT is now available at about 60% of its
original price?
...the price of the Lynx has also been significantly cut down?
...a new Atari computer has seen the light of day early this
year?
...I am referring to the Mega STE here?
...this is basically a 16 Mhz STE in a TT housing with TT
interfaces and a 48 (?) Mb harddisk standard?
...it will be available in 1, 2 and 4 Mb versions, of which the
latter is available first?
...Atari will also soon launch two other new ST-based systems?
...one of them is called "ST Book"?
...this is a kind of "STacy" but different?
...it's a lot flatter (43 mm), and 22 by 29 centimetre big?
...it's got an LCD screen, 10 hour battery life, and a 20 Mb
harddisk with 19 msec access time?
...it will cost around 2000 dollar, and will probably be
available mid 1991?
...the other is "ST Pad"?
...a prototype of this was shown on the CeBIT, so it will
probably take another while before it gets released?
...it's an ST without keyboard and mouse, and with a touch-
sensitive LCD screen?
...it's got a light-pen like mouse replacement?
...it has the same sizes as the "ST Book", but is only 36 mm
thick?
...it will also have 10 hours of use on a set of batteries, and
data can be kept for 6 months in 'stand by' mode?
...the name will probably change?
...the price will be about 1500 dollar?
...Atari will also launch a new CD ROM, the CDAR 505 at 400
dollars?
...it will be available from June 1991, and can be connected
directly to MEGA STE and TT?
...when you take 'ulf' out of 'Gulf War' you get 'Gwar'?
...this was discovered by Spaz?
...Stefan got hopelessly lost in Utrecht when travelling to
my place in order to finish this issue?
...he was rather annoyed and nearly ran into the phonebooth that
gave him the right answers (from me of course) after about
three people had 'helped' him?
.. he is now sitting here, fed well and drinking coke-vieux with
a grin on his face?
...the Lost Boys have decided to do another game?
...this one will be totally different from 'A Prehistoric Tale'
and that I am not allowed to give details about it?
...I heard that there may be a new disk magazine due for
release soon?
...it will be done by Galtan Six?
...I hope to be able to offer you more details in ST NEWS Volume
6 Issue 2?
...some of the people responsible for the "News Channel" disk
magazine (R.I.P.) will probably help with it?
...I hope it will work out?
...the Lynx II (the standard Lynx but smaller, looking more like
a Gameboy) is said to cost $99 once it will be available?
...this issue of ST NEWS again has a somewhat revolutionary
hidden article (of some sort)?
...it was written after the consumption of one bottle of Apple
wine (care of Relayer), one bottle of Rum (care of
Overlanders), half a litre of Vodka and a bit of Whisky while
watching a Napalm Death "Live Corruption" video?
...the article is as obscene and stupid as you can possible get?
..."Highlander II" is a shit film?
...the only things that are good about it are the hero's female
and some of the special effects?
...the story is really bad and incoherent?
..."Kindergarten Cop", another film, however, is much better than
its title assumes?
...it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in quite a nice role?
...the first (and last) game I ever designed at Thalion is out
now?
...it is called "A Prehistoric Tale" and has become, though not
original or brilliant or anything of that kind, a nicely
playable little platform game?
...review ratings are ranging from 23% to 77%?
...Stefan will probably review it in the next issue of ST NEWS?
..."Lemmings" will very likely turn out to be the game of the
nineties?
...it is the most brilliant and original plot since "Populous" in
1989?
...I know a couple of people who have already played it on the
Amiga (ahem) and they played it for days and days in a row?
...I cannot wait to get my hands on an ST version?
...I hope to be able to offer you a review of it in ST NEWS
Volume 6 Issue 2?
...that will, by the way, be the first lustrum issue?
...more about that can be read in the following ST NEWS?
...this will be launched on July 26th 1991?
...the next issue will also be 'normal' again, i.e. with all
'regulars' and stuff like that?
...the rumoured 68000-based Atari console dubbed Panther should
be available by the end of the year?
...Atari also speaks of an 68030-based console in 1992?
...this all sounds very interesting, if not very EXCITING?
...rumours include >256 colours on screen at the same time, lotsa
(LOTSA) colours, and lotsa (LOTSA) co-processors?
...Eclipse design is working on some new games?
...some titles are "Monster Business" (a platform game) and
"Lethal XCess" (a shoot-'em-up)?
...these titles are not definite yet?
...the fabulously fast and notorious alternative operating system
"Kaosdesk" is now for sale officially?
...this is really a very good operating system version?
..."GfA Basic" version 4.0 is rumoured to be released later this
year?
...I have but recently discovered the "Dragonlance" series of
books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman?
...they are VERY good, and much more fun to read even than "Lord
of the Rings" if you ask me?
...the stories may be soemwhat inconsistent here and there (yeah
yeah, Lucas, so what), but the atmosphere is brilliant?
...you should not miss this if you like reading fantasy?
...Jez San's Argonaut is now about to launch their 'fabulous'
flight sim, "Hawk"?
...we reported about this in ST NEWS Volume 4 Issue 4, almost two
years ago?
...the program has now already taken four years to develop?
...it is supposed to be released between September and December
of this year now?
...its name has changed to "Birds of Prey"?
...Millenium is doing a sequel to "James Pond" which will be
called "Robocod"?
...I surely hope Steve Bak and Chris Sorrell will make another
jolly good game of it?
...a demo I saw looked promising?
...Millenium will further do "Demolition Derby and "Fu Manchu In
The Way Of The Shuriken" soon?
...I also got to know some nice cheats for "James Pond"?
...you've got to type in "MR2" to activate them?
...you will then get a helmet on your head?
...the lowest line of keys (Z,X,C..etc.) will bring you to levels
1 to 9?
...'D' brings you either to the next level or kills enemioes?
...'P' lets you dance, 'S' lets you shake, and the upper row of
keys (excluding ESCAPE give you nice little extras?
...this "Did you know that..." column is a lot shorter than
usual?
...this is because of the relatively short time we had before
finishing this issue?
...we still hope it was not entirely uninteresting?
See you in our lustrum issue, due for release on July 26th 1991!
