5 IN 1 RAMDISK by Richard Karsmakers
Everybody must have worked with a RAM disk at one time in
his/her ST carreer. RAM disks are disk drives in your computer's
memory, that make loading and saving speeds extremely fast: Even
much, much faster than hard disks!
But, apart from the simple fact that RAM disks tend to take up
more or less memory from your computer, they usually have several
disadvantages. The first disadvantage, that some RAM disk
programs already knew how to handle, was the fact that resetting
the system caused loss of all data present in the RAM disk.
Another disadvantage was the fact that most RAM disks that had
solved this problem (that were, as it is called, 'reset-proof')
could not be removed once they were installed. And, if the
programmer chose to need more memory suddenly, it had to be re-
installed with a new, smaller size. Redefination of its size was
impossible, even with the RAM disks that weren't even reset-
proof. One always had to remove it (all data lost...) and then
re-install it.
Stiching Users Support has recently published a RAM disk program
that may be called unique in its kind, maybe even the most unique
and versatile RAM disk program ever developed for the Atari ST
anywhere: Maarten de Rijk's "5 in 1 RAM disk".
At first, I was terribly sceptical when I read the
specifications of the program. After all, usually the ingenious
programmers live abroad, have huge salaries, drive in luxuary
sports cars and are not the kind of people that walk around
without bodyguards and that take their system to a usergroup
meeting every month and sit there chatting to mortals like yours
truly. Wouldn't you be sceptical if you read these
specifications?...
* Reset resistant (of course)
* Works on ALL STs (also MEGA STs)
* Size adjustable in 1Kb steps
* Resizing possible without losing the contents (!!)
* Up to seven RAM disks in memory at once
* RAM disks are completely independent (no program in
an AUTO folder or something like that)
* Other (RAM-) disks can be used as boot drive
(accessories & AUTO folders on RAM disk possible)
* Copying from/to RAM disk possible (also entire disks)
You must admit that the specifications are, to say the least,
mind-staggering. In fact, this "5 in 1 RAM disk" offers
everything you always wanted! Add to that the fact that it offers
a small built-in RAM disk monitor, disk format possibilities for
40/80/81/82 tracks (with IBM boot record if required), and what's
more to wish?
I have worked with the program for a while, and it didn't take
long to realise that what I had acquired was not 'just another
RAM disk program'. NO! It's THE RAM disk program! It offers
everything that all other available RAM disks have to offer at a
price of just 69 Dutch guilders! Optimising of RAM disk data
storage is also possible, as well as repairing damaged disks with
relative simplicity and without much knowledge needed.
Especially all programmers should purchase this program
immediately! The manual (quite clumsily written, by the way) is
still in Dutch, and the program doesn't work when a harddisk is
installed. These hindrances will be taken care of in higher
version numbers.
Thanks to Hubert van Mil and Maarten de Rijk for supplying a
review copy!
