EDITORIAL - A MAJOR CHANGE

 You will,  most probably,  have noticed that three major  things 
have changed in the ST NEWS setup during the last half year.  All 
these  changes were necessary to keep up the quality of  ST  NEWS 
without letting my study suffer too much.
 First,  I realised I had to cast off the Public Domain  service. 
It  consumed a couple of hours each day - hours that I could  not 
use anymore for ST NEWS or school. Casting off the PD service had 
a major disadvantage:  People now had to pay for their PD whereas 
it has been free of additional costs for over a year.  But  there 
was  an  even bigger advantage that came with  it:  The  ST  Club 
Eindhoven PD library was about 15 times bigger!
 Second,  I stopped copying ST NEWS to the countries where we had 
foreign distributors.  I still lost too much precious time merely 
copying ST NEWS,  and I didn't want to do that  anymore,  either. 
Too time-consuming, as you'll understand.
 Third,  on January 1st 1988, I introduced one additional change: 
Since  copying ST NEWS just in Holland still took too much of  my 
time,  I was forced to stop copying ST NEWS it in Holland as well 
(which  I didn't like to give up).  ST NEWS could,  from now  on, 
only be ordered through the PD libraries if one lived in Holland.
  These  three changes have taken care that ST NEWS has  been  of 
stable   quality  (even  improving  standards  here  and   there) 
throughout  its existence.  And that's the most important  thing, 
don't  you  agree?  After  all,  it's  the  disk  magazine   that 
everything's  about  and that is the one thing  that  should  not 
suffer - at all costs.

 As I write this, a fourth and even bigger change is nigh. It's a 
change  that  I'd  been thinking about  a  longer  time  already: 
Finding  someone to replace me as the editor of  ST  NEWS.  After 
all,  once I've started studying at University (coming August)  I 
don't  think I'd have enough time to support ST NEWS the  way  it 
needs  and deserves to be supported.  And I didn't even  want  to 
think about only being able to publish it twice or thrice a  year 
-  which would give our rival disk magazine ("F.A.S.T.E.R.")  our 
current strongest advantage: Actuality.
 So I started looking.  Frank was out of the question,  since  he 
has to perform national service at least until December 1988.  So 
I  started  thinking  about  a fusion with  the  new  Dutch  disk 
magazine "ST Info".  But when I saw its setup and quality, I knew 
this  wouldn't be my best bet.  Besides,  they only publish  four 
times a year and that isn't enough.
 I also contacted Mark van den Boer if he would care to take over 
being the editor.  No deal.  As he was studying himself (I should 
have known) he had been having enough trouble already sending  in 
his  regular  ST NEWS articles,  let alone publishing  the  whole 
magazine.
  Next  in line (and,  now I think of it,  probably the  one  who 
should  have  been the first in line) was my dear friend  and  ST 
NEWS  co-author  Stefan Posthuma.  But luck wasn't  on  my  side. 
Stefan,  too, had to perform national service - starting at March 
this year.  My hopes sank below zero.  He was,  in fact, the only 
satisfying   and   appropriate  alternative:   He   had   humour, 
enthusiasm,  fantastic programming capabilities, excellent use of 
English  and  I  style of writing that I considered  to  be  very 
attractive. He had all the talents I thought a new ST NEWS editor 
ought to have.  And he's quite inspired as well (after all,  he's 
got  one  of  those very nice sisters and he's  in  love  with  a 
supposedly  very  exciting girl called  Evelien,  that  lets  him 
wander in the pink mists of love all the time),  just like I have 
been since the summer of last year (Willeke, sigh....).

 My hopes rose again (to boiling point) when I heard that  Stefan 
needn't join the Dutch armed forces after all - he was completely 
available now,  and I knew he would be the best successor I could 
possibly wish.  I would be able to study at university after all, 
without  having to worry about the future of ST NEWS  now  Stefan 
could take over.
 Oops! That left but one tiny problem. Would Stefan agree at all?

  After  but  a  few  minutes  of  trying  to  persuade  him,  he 
agreed (I am afraid suicidal tendencies would have been the  only 
other alternative,  so I was lucky). Oooof. That was probably the 
biggest sigh of relief I ever uttered.  So the future of ST  NEWS 
was secured after all. Sigh (again).
 Starting with the next issue of ST NEWS (which will be Volume  3 
Issue 3,  after 16 issues of ST NEWS alltogether), Stefan will be 
the editor;  I will go down the hierarchic system a bit and  will 
end up being a software reviewer.

 Let's draw some conclusions now.  What will actually change  for 
you,  ST NEWS readers? The man to contact and to send articles to 
will from now on by Stefan Posthuma,  and donations are much more 
deserved  by him from now on rather than me.  The  correspondence 
address  will  change  accordingly - to  that  new  address,  all 
articles, artwork, questions, answers, etc. will need to be sent. 
Nothing else changes.  Most of you will probably not notice  this 
fourth  and  quite major change,  because ST NEWS will  still  be 
available  through the usual channels (PD libraries and  official 
foreign  distributor).  Only people living in countries where  we 
have  no foreign distributor will have to order directly  at  the 
new correspondence address.  And PD will still have to be ordered 
through ST Club Eindhoven.

  I  have  complete faith that Stefan can and  will  continue  to 
improve the standards of ST NEWS in the future - quite frankly, I 
think he's the only one who could achieve that.  He's quite  used 
to  my ST NEWS program environment already,  and has helped me  a 
lot  already.  No,  there won't be much problems  with  switching 
editors in this case.

 And you have not heard the last of me,  yet!  I will continue to 
write  reviews of some programs and maybe write  some  more.  The 
editorial  switch  is  valid for at least one  year  (until  I've 
finished the first year Biology at University,  which is said  to 
be the heaviest),  and it is not improbable that I will get to be 
more active once again after that.

 I sincerely hope you will enjoy the last ST NEWS that I  edited. 
I know Stefan will do a swell job in the future,  and I hope  you 
will  continue to support him like you used to  support  me.  You 
know what?  You can now transfer a 'parting gift' to giro account

longer be used for further improving of the ST NEWS concept,  but

poor student.  And you know something more? I would consider it a 
very   nice   gesture  to  Stefan  if  you  would   transfer   an 
'appreciation  gift'  to his giro account number,  that  will  no 
doubt be published in ST NEWS Volume 3 Issue 3 onward.
