POP POLL by Richard Karsmakers
We've got another brand new number one this time - another one
that came in it right out of the blue! This time, it's the famous
sequel to "Arkanoid", which is hence named "Arkanoid II - Revenge
of Doh". This is definitely one of the MOST addictive games ever
launched, and it will probably last quite some time in the higher
regions of the poll. As I already told you in the previous issue
of ST NEWS, "Arkanoid" itself did indeed leave the charts, and
will soon be forgotten now such an excellent sequel has been
produced. "Impact", strangely enough, still seems to survive
quite well.
Unlike "Arkanoid", "Bubble Bobble" seems never to leave the
charts - not even the highest regions. It has been at the very
top for over half a year now, something which can be called quite
remarkable for a computer game. About the same is the situation
with "Super Sprint", although its rankings were always just below
those of Firebird's mega-addictive game. Shall we lay down a bet
where this game ends up in the Software Top 100 that will be
published in the last ST NEWS issue of 1988?!
A game that will probably join "Arkanoid" in its fate is
Novagen's "Backlash", gently going down in the rankings and
probably gone next time. "Dungeon Master", however, seems to do
quite excellently down there; it now spends its third issue on
number 18, where no game seems to be able to beat it off. This is
probably due to its incredible gameplay, mixed with the fact that
really few people REALLY get hooked on this game. "Carrier
Command", another one of such games, is going up slowly.
Foretelling what it will do in the next pop poll software top 20
will be hard.
A remarkable game that was launched just before this ST NEWS
issue was made, was Firebird's "Elite". As a matter of fact, it
made "Flightsimulator II" go down one place, and "Elite" surely
must have sold well when it is present in the top 20 a mere week
after its launch!
When looking at the companies, we see that a quarter of all
places are occupied by Telecom programs (Firebird and Rainbird),
whereas some less are occupied by Elite. Microdeal follows a
close third.

The next issue of ST NEWS will contain the Software top 100,
calculated by means of all pop polls ever published in ST NEWS
uptil now (a total of 9 pop polls, compiled from July 25th 1987
on). See you then! The first 1989 issue will again contain a
regular pop poll software top 20...
