BIONIC COMMANDO by Frank Lemmen
Did you ever feel the urge to save mankind from world wide
terrorism? Or to struggle for life in a world ruled by
transformers, insectivores which are more like pterodactyls,
little Hitler-alike officers and more of these drags of society?
If you are generally daydreaming about all this, you are the
person to play the new and exciting game called "Bionic
Commando", launched by U.S. Gold and written by Capcom. The game
is level-based; the goal is to destroy all alien life, as well as
all life that looks human but that doesn't act as such. This
goal can be achieved by mastering five levels.
"It may have been ten years, but the oppression and devastation
continues. The alien forces that laid waste to our once beautiful
world have all but decimated our civilization". Thus reads the
plot. "Now, for the first time in so many year comes our chance
for glory again. The Bionic Commandos. This elite fighting force
is each equipped with a bionic arm with which they can climb and
swing from the platform by extending their arm and grabbing any
suitable object above them. The arm is also useful for catching
provisions and extra weapons parachuted into the combat zone. As
a weapon the bionic arm delivers an awesome blow to any enemy
soldiers he may come to grips with. After battling his way
through the alien base complex, the commando must destroy the
launch computer, thus preventing the aliens from using their
doomsday weapon."
The levels you must conquer are:
Level 1. The dying forest.
This is the only route to the alien base complex. Watch out for
guards armed with guns and grenades. Further up in the level
flesh eating birds will attack you.
Level 2. The Castle.
Battle your way across the guards and watch out for electrical
wires which will electrocute you immediately. If you're almost
there you must destroy two kamikaze soldiers who intend to blow
your brains out.
Level 3. Infiltration.
Now that you reached the underground level you must get into the
sewer system for your own health. There you find some immovable
doors which can only be opened with a simple trick. If you opened
them, giant robots (transformers) will try to splat you and
hopping helicopters will try to shoot you.
Level 4. The control room.
Now you must haste to the missile because time is running out
and your opponents are getting stronger.
Level 5. The silo.
This is the final and most difficult level of Bionic Commando.
Smash through the remaining defences that have a few lethal
surprises in store. Once at the top of the room, blast the
soldiers, and destroy the launch computer. 3....2...1....????
I'll hope you make it.
The game is supplied with good graphics and nice music. It is
even highly playable, although Capcom's previous product (which
was of course Firebird's "Bubble Bobble") was better. The plot is
original and, without ST NEWS' trainer we published in the
previous issue, it takes care of quite some hours of playing
enjoyment.
