THE ULTIMATE VIRUS KILLER BOOK
- A SHORT INTRODUCTION -
by Richard Karsmakers
As I write this, it's August 24th, fairly early in the evening.
These are the first words I write for the "Ultimate Virus Killer
Book" on disk, in my mental pipeline since early this year and
originally scheduled for a release around July 1st, exactly a
year after the printed version of the book was shipped out for
the first time.
The delay was caused by my academic pursuits, or rather them
being rather more intense and time-consuming than I had thought.
That, in turn, caused the final issue of ST NEWS (the disk
magazine I also did) to be delayed by about three weeks. ST NEWS
was my number one summer holiday priority, and this on disk
version of the "Ultimate Virus Killer Book" my second.
THE ULTIMATE VIRUS KILLER BOOK
The printed version was not a huge success. I had reckoned I
would sell about a 100 copies at the least, possibly 200 or even
300. I started off with a 50-copy run. Of those, six went off to
reviewers for free (of course), 2 went out to 'smaller' reviewers
at a discount, 4 copies were sold to friends at a discount, and
one I kept myself. The remaining copies only sold with
difficulty. Reviews had not all been favourable due to the poor
printing and duplication quality of the product, even though some
people wrote almost incredulously positive (thanks Michael
Burkley and Mark Smith!). This poor quality was logical as the
printing was done in 'NLQ' mode on my own 9-needle Citizen Swift
9 printer. Duplication was taken care of at the local copy shop.
The price was cranked up because of the initial limited print run
(I didn't have faith in huge sales) and Niall McKiernon's Douglas
Communications wanting to have a profit margin as well. So
£ 11.99 it became, with each copy costing £ 8 to produce and
ship, and Niall and myself splitting the fairly meagre profit
margin at 50-50 for the copies he sold.
ON DISK
This on disk version will couple the good bits of the "Ultimate
Virus Killer Book" - the actual contents, which I understand only
one person could partly find fault with - with the immaculate
reproductive capacity of whatever monitor you're using. I have
applied the user interface of ST NEWS in order to make the whole
thing easily accessible; it also supports a printing option so
you can produce your own hardcopies with whatever quality your
printer supports.
THE SECOND EDITION
However, this on disk "Ultimate Virus Killer Book" is not just a
disk version. I also spotted some typos, you see, and some people
wrote in to say stuff about various passages. New things happened
in the field of computer viruses, and I discovered stuff about MS
DOS viruses I had so far been blissfully unaware of. So this is a
second edition, if you will, revised and revamped, and then
transformed into an easy-to-use user interface.
VERSION HISTORY
1.0 - 25 August 1996
The first version of the book "on disk", made up-to-date to that
date, with the general book text overhauled and various bits
changed and improved.
1.1 - 17 January 2016
After ripping all the articles and transferring them into a
website-compatible format, changed some of the text and removed
all mention of it being Shareware (incidentally, zero people
registered back in 1996 or at any date afterwards...). Also added
all the pictures that originally were in the book but that the ST
NEWS-based interface couldn't handle.
