SOFTWARE REVIEW: SENTINEL by Richard Karsmakers
At the moment that I write down these words into "1st Word Plus",
the time is 01:04 AM, Saturday morning, September 12th 1987. A
slight headache starts to manifest itself into my tired brain
after many hours of working on the last pieces of ST NEWS and
looking at the terrific movie "Poltergeist" on the TV. In spite
of the fact that I'm practically asleep at the moment, and in
spite of the fact that I have to get up in time tomorrow to go to
the big ST Club Eindhoven meeting (to launch this issue of ST
NEWS), I will try to make this review as good as possible.
"Sentinel" is one of Firebird's recent releases, selling at
£19.95. The first thing that strikes the player when the game has
loaded, is that the sound effects are really 'acoustical', and
that the game overall features almost perfect simplicity - the
latter fortunately only being a first impression. A three-
dimensional universe of 10,000 (yes, that's no misprint) worlds
that the player has to conquer. You are a Synthoid that has to
destroy each Sentinel on each world (these Sentinels are often
helped by so-called Sentries).
The game is controlled by mouse and the keyboard, and features
smoothly scrolling 3D graphics. Once the plot is clear, and once
you've learned how to play the game (using specific keys), you
can conquer world after world. After finishing one landscape, you
get the code for the next one (thus creating something they call
a 'game save').
The manual explains quite clearly how "Sentinel" has to be
played, although I get the impression that the author of the
manual was in a bit of a hurry when he had to write it. Some
typing errors ('destory' instead of 'destroy' for example). But
this really shouldn't spoil it. "Sentinel" is one of those game
that looks simple, but turns out to be rather difficult - and it
gets even more difficult each time you enter a new and higher
world! Simplicity does not neccessarily mean badness of quality,
and this game displays that as clearly as is possible.
Game Rating:
Name: Sentinel
Company: Firebird
Graphics: 8 (good 3D effect/scrolling)
Sounds: 8.5 (very real)
Playability: 8
Hookability: 8
Price: £19.95
Remark: Game of solid quality
Thanks to Firebird for sending me the program to be reviewed in
ST NEWS! I am terrible sorry that I couldn't make more of this (a
story like I wrote with "Tracker"), but I simply lacked the mere
being awake. "Sentinel" did come in quite late, so it's not
entirely my fault...
