GRACIA FONT PRO by Richard Karsmakers
Originally scheduled to be published in the previous issue of ST
NEWS, I hereby offer you the review of one of the best cheaper
Star NL-10 printer utilities available anywhere: "Gracia Font
Pro" by Mr. E. Scherer (who already wrote something about his
program in the previous issue of ST NEWS).
Everybody must have been amazed when the first "Signum!"
printouts appeared. Stunning quality, even possible on a 'simple'
9-needle printer! Only a pity that this new German program was
so extremely utterly expensive...most people simply cannot afford
to spend such amounts of money on a program that will enable them
to make better printed work.
Mr. Scherer must have thought exactly the same. He needed a
program that could print custom character sets on his NL-10,
preferably with "Signum!" quality. And so he sat down and started
programming.
The result is amazing: The quality of the printout is just about
the same as "Signum!" (smart one who sees any difference) - and a
little faster as well!
The main difference is that "Gracia Font Pro" is 'only' a font
design program together with a program to print out texts made
with popular word processors like "1st Word Plus", "HABA Writer",
"Boffin" and "Word Writer". It's no word processor itself.
One simply boots up his system with the "Gracia Font Pro" disk in
the drive. The desk accessory is loaded and one can then load the
word processor one generally uses - and start to write. Whenever
you want to use your custom character set, you press the left
shift key and alternate simultaneously and...hocus pocus pilatus
pas!.....other characters appear on the screen when typing. These
can be Greek, Russian, scientific notations, or even your own
designed character set (which can be made using the Font Editor
that is also included in the package).
Some of the other features of "Gracia Font Pro" are:
- Three alternative keyboards obtainable
- Possibility to download characters to NL-10 or any other
printer with downloading possibilities
- Proportional NLQ printing (please note: With NLQ, this modest
man actually means his stunning "Signum!" quality!)
For a price of around 100 Dutch Guilders, this program is about
the best program money can buy; competitors can only be sought in
the price classes that are a lot higher.
For info, you can contact Mr. Scherer who sells the program
