"Why is it when they say an adult has the 'mind of a child' they
lock him up... while children are allowed to run free in the
streets?"
Garfield, Life and Lasagne, Jim Davis
DID YOU KNOW THAT...
by Richard Karsmakers
Concerning ST NEWS
...this is the seventh undead issue of ST NEWS, Volume 8 Issue 1?
...it is the 34th issue in total?
...it was finished on May 15th 1992?
...this issue is dedicated to someone we all know and love?
...more information about him is to be found in the dedication
article?
...this issue's picture was done by Lobo of Scum Of The Earth
(S.O.T.E.)?
...this picture came third in last years Elektra Mega Leif
Convention?
...it's rather brilliant, especially if you know what sort of
generally weird person Lobo is?
...this issue's rather brillo air vibrations were conceived by
Big Alec of the Delta Force again?
...we are again very proud to offer this song called "A Case
For Two"?
...we have two more tunes lined up for further ST NEWS issues?
..., as far as we know, the music causes a crash on the Falcon?
...this issue finally features the results of the "Big ST NEWS
Popularity Poll"?
...we have another new official foreign distributor?
...he's from Poland, and his details can be read in the "ST NEWS
Colophon" article?
...we have changed English distributors?
...as we reckoned Page 6 wasn't active enough, what with them
barely supporting the ST market?
...our new official UK distributor is Paul Glover's ST Club?
...the address can be found in the "ST NEWS Colophon" article?
...the PROGRAMS folder again features some rather interesting
material (at least that's what we think)?
...one of them is a very nice shareware game by Sinister
Developments, called "Centipede"?
...the program was supplied (and, so I believe, co-written) by
Mike Watson, who did the previous issue's "Mega Depack"
program?
...the "Centipede" program has appeared previously on an "ST
Format" cover disk, but the version on offer here is a better,
debugged version?
...another pretty neat offering is a one-file music demo by Big
Alec of the Delta Force (who also did the music for this
issue, as you could read above)?
...we're quite proud being able to offer such outstanding
software?
...this issue once again features a course?
...this time 'round it's a GEM programmer course for assembler
programmers?
...the course gives us a unique chance at seeing the other side
of Ciaran "Ringpull" Wills, too?
...his "Perverts Monthly" is also featured in a second most
exciting instalment?
42
...I am still searching for occurrences of the number "42" in
everyday life?
...occurrences may be specified and sent to the correspondence
address (preferably mine)?
...the less idiosyncratic the entry, the better?
...I still need quite a lot of information, what with my aim of
the article itself having to be 42 Kb?
...I will also send a copy of the article to Douglas Adams when
it's finished?
...the ideal finishing date would be just before March 11th 1994,
which will be the date on which he'll become 42 himself?
...at any rate the article will be published in a Volume 9 issue
of ST NEWS?
...I'd like to ask you all to keep your eyes and ears open, and
send lots of "42" occurrences?
...you shouldn't hesitate, but send them right now?
...I only need about half of all entries still?
Music
...female guitarist Jennifer Batten (of Michael Vomit-son 'fame')
has released her first solo album?
...it is rather brilliant, for she is without a doubt the best
female guitarist (and one of the best all-over) in the world?
...I recently got my hands on some San Fransisco bootleg tapes of
some Cacophony concerts (the band featuring Jason Becker (!)
and Marty Friedman)?
...I find it truly awesome to listen to, also because I know
Jason will never be able to play like he does on those tapes?
...it makes me feel sad, somehow?
...another guitar magician, Cyril Whistler, has been heard of
again?
...the band Whistler Courbois Whistler have released their second
CD, which is totally excellent?
...it's called "Privilege"?
...I like it more each time I listen to it?
...it's instantly recognizable yet brilliantly different from
their debut?
...the Italian CD label Metal Crash has released a brilliant
Queensrÿche bootleg?
...it's called "Unplugged and other stories"?
...it features excellent quality tracks recorded by the band
during an "MTV Unplugged" performance, as well as tracks
recorded in New York (October 1983) and Tokyo (at Budokan,
1985, off the "Live in Tokyo" home video)?
...Living Colour have released an excellent follow-up to their
previous "Time's Up" CD, called "Stain"?
...you'll definitely like it if you're into Living Colour?
...it's progressive, slightly experimental ethno-metal with funk
and industrial touches here and there?
...a rather excellent Obituary bootleg has been released some
time ago?
...it's called "Godly Beings", and also features some Sepultura
tracks?
...Van Halen (about which' concert all can be read in an article
elsewhere in this issue) have recently released a double live
CD and a 2-hour live video?
...I have not seen the video yet, but the CD is quite worthy of
purchase?
...it's called "Live: Right Here, Right Now", and simply should
be had?
...a totally non-heavy but nonetheless totally brilliant band
that I've been lead to discover recently is Norwegian "Bel
Canto"?
...they make sortof poppy music, but it's very good and extremely
atmospheric?
...I am deeply indebted to Kai and Leif for getting me into touch
with this band?
...Jean Michel Jarre will tour Europe in August and September?
...according to some data I got, he will bring a 150x24 metre
'city' with him where his music and audiovisuals will be
performed?
...it should be quite spectacular?
...the theme will be "Chronologie", which is also the name of his
forthcoming album?
Films
...Stephen King's latest film, "Sleepwalker" is very exciting and
good?
...special effects are great, Mädchen Amick (Shelly, Leo's wife
in "Twin Peaks") looks lovely, and the whole general thing is
pretty neat?
...it's quite thrilling, too?
...it's definitely one of the better 1992 films, even though some
people I know found otherwise?
...another film everybody should have seen is "The Beauty and the
Beast"?
...it's not a film you have to have seen in a cinema?
...it's a brilliant cliché-wielding excercise, and technically
very capable?
...even the singing is rather good?
...recently I also saw "Boyz'n'the Hood"?
...I had expected this to be crap film?
...it was most impressive, however?
...if this is anything like reality, Los Angeles' South Central
is surely one enormously f@*ked up place?
..."Dracula" is another film you will need to have seen?
...the atmopshere and special effects are rather impressive?
...the story is somewhat on the thin side, though?
...Coppola was so impressed by the success of 'Dracula' that he
is now doing 'Frankenstein'?
...that Robert de Niro will play the monster?
Books and magazines
...Neil Gaiman has written a book about Douglas Adams and "The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy?
...this book was already written way back in 1988?
...a full review is dedicated to it, elsewhere in this issue of
ST NEWS?
Disk magazines
...the first issue of "Twilight Zone", the fiction-only on-line
multi-format ST NEWS spin-off, was released on April 21st
1993?
...it will mainly be spread through email?
...it features only pre-published ST NEWS fiction?
...only my own writings of somewhat older origin will be (and
have been) rehashed?
...in some cases this meant (and will mean) a virtual rewrite?
...you should tell your friends about it (preferably if they have
an email account, that is)?
...more details may be obtained from this issue's "Disk Magazine"
review article?
Atari
...Atari intended to drop the price of the Falcon in spring 1993?
...the drop would have been to £399, for a machine with re-
designed housing?
...these were non-confirmed rumours, that were thought to be
close to reality?
...none of them happened, however?
...a Falcon-compatible CD ROM drive should be available by the
end of this year?
...there has been a rumour about Atari planning a totally new
hardware approach to the Falcon?
...this would involve an intent to release hardware add-ons
regularly in order to keep ahead of Commodore?
...I think this would not be a very good approach, as this will
by default mean that early Falcon buyers will get punished for
their enthusiasm, since they will have less well-equipped
machines?
...Atari Benelux denied plans along these lines, but instead said
these extra chips might be implemented in Falcon 040, 050,
seeing as the 030 is basically the entering model for a
totally new generation of computers?
...the chips the rumours were about were ones allowing 256 64*64
pixel clipped sprites per vbl and filled vector 3D, rotations
and zooms (all clipped, of course)?
..., apart from the software mentioned in the previous issue's
"Fornicatingly Fabulous Falcon" article, the machine will also
be supplied with a limited (but nonetheless impressive)
version of the Compo Hard disk recording system?
...Atari intend to have sold 500,000 Falcon systems by the end of
this year?
...this is way beyond the magic 100,000 limit beyond which a
machine can be claimed to be 'successful'?
...Electronic Arts' American branch is said to be programming
"Deluxe Paint V" for the Falcon?
...it may or may not be bundled with UK Falcon packages?
...a MEGA-ST-style Falcon (PC-style case with separate keyboard)
may be released somewhere in the near future?
...Atari does not want to reveal any prices or release dates as
they are afraid it might keep people from buying the
'ordinary' Falcon?
...at the moment a total of 7 Falcon-based types of machine are
being produced, although not all of these will probably make
it to the consumer?
...the Falcon, according to Atari, will probably not be available
in larger numbers until September?
..., knowing Atari, this will probably turn out even later?
...the Jaguar, Atari rumouredly highly acclaimed games console,
has been finished around February 1993?
...over a dozen developers have been supplied with the machine
around that time?
...further details (price, commercial release date, etc.) are not
known?
...a rumour goes that Atari is concentrating on the consoles
games market, or at least will do soon?
...the Falcon, so it is said, is only kept in the sideline?
...we'll keep you posted?
...Atari have reintroduced the Atari 520 STFM, 520 STE and 1040
STE at reduced prices?
...they have done this to assail the console market, especially
in the UK?
Software
...a newer version of the Z88 communication program "Z88 - ST
Link" has become available?
..., remarkably (not), it's called "Z88 - ST Link II"?
...Branch Always software is now called Purple Mountain Software?
...they publish a newsletter called "ST News"?
...HiSoft will probably be the company with the first Falcon
drawing package?
...it will be called "True Paint" and will by done by John Gymer
(who did "Canvas")?
...the price should be somewhere around £40?
...Compo has released Falcon versions of their most prominent
software packages, "That's Write 2" and "That's Address"?
...the harddisk recording package mentioned earlier is called
"Musicom"?
...more information about it may be obtained from a "Falcon
Software" article, elsewhere in this issue?
...Peaceville Records (who did early Paradise Lost and who now do
My Dying Bride) have entered the licenseware scene?
...their products include demos with sound samples off their
artists?
...the word processing program "Le Redacteur 3", reviewed in the
previous issue of ST NEWS, has been made cheaper?
...its new price is £99, with "Le Redacteur 3 Lite" (without any
additional modules) available at £69?
...Mark Matts' excellent GfA Basic source code package "Front
End", allowing you to use fancy dialog boxes and windows and
such, has been renamed?
...it's now called "GUI4GFA", and made even utterly better?
...Double Click software, responsible for programs such as "DC
Squish", "DC Format", "DC Data Diet" and "DC Extract", has
gone broke?
...Jonathan Lawrence has released an updated version of his
famous "Mousetricks", the extensive mousespeeder?
...it's called (surprise!) "Mousetricks 2"?
...it should cater for an ST user's every need?
...a new version of the popular shareware autoboot configuration
program "Superboot" has been released?
...it's version 8.0?
...you can refer to this issue's "ST Software News" for more
information on this product?
...the much-rumoured-about new version of "GfA Basic" will not
even be called "GfA Basic" any more?
...instead it will be called "Basic 400"?
...it will still allegedly be 100% compatible, though?
...Vincent Pomey, author of the most excellent "ST Zip", will
release version 2.3 of his utility within a few weeks?
Lynx
...this issue includes a Lynx cheat special?
...this article was written by Chris "Dizzy Diskzine" Banham, who
did it because he considered it a pity we've discontinued the
"JournaLYNX" column as of the previous ST NEWS issue?
...our good friend Alex Pustan has also written some Lynx reviews
for you to read?
...he intended them for use in sortof an undead "JournaLYNX", but
I decided against that?
Hardware
...Motorola intends to release a 68060 before the end of 1993?
...this processor will run at 100 MIPS (Million Instruction Per
Second)?
..., by comparison, the ST runs at 0.25 MIPS, and the Falcon at a
'mere' 3.84 MIPS?
Miscellaneous
...Gribnif Software (of "NeoDesk" fame, among others) has moved?
...their new address is P.O. Box 779, Northampton, Massachusetts
01061, United States of America?
...Psygnosis recently got The Queen's Ward for Export?
...this is largely due to their multiple format products that
now sell all over the world?
...they seem to be primarily living off the fame of the "Shadow
of the Beast" trilogy and "Lemmings" (the first of which just
shows to tell how warped the industry really is)?
...German distribution company United Software has gone broke?
...they have correspondingly been bought by Microprose?
...it seems like Microprose is buying up the entire market?
...Microprose already started years ago?
...I wonder when it will end?
...I seem to recall that Thalion was owned by United Software
too, which means that they are now owned by Microprose as
well?
...I know of no details?
...I recently bought a new CD player?
...my old one, a Pioneer 4xxx something, had started to randomly
leap CD tracks again?
...I have now decided on a Sony CDP997, which is the best CD
player they have that isn't part of their "Extremely Standard"
mega-range?
...it has custom edit (the thing can remember which CD is
playing, its volume level and the tracks it needs to skip) and
a whole host of other functions that simply made me drool when
reading about them?
...I feel, nonetheless, that I'm betraying Pioneer?
...my two Pioneer CD players so far have betrayed me, however,
each time by skipping tracks and stuff like that?
...it went beyond the simplicity of a dirty laser lens?
...I've been to England for a little less than a week in March?
...the occasion was a trip of over 50 fellow English students to
Cambridge?
...I've learned an invaluable lesson of life there?
...this lesson is "never eat anything that has the word
'vindaloo' in it"?
...this stuff is awesomely spicy in a way I can only describe as
'gastronomic masochism'?
...the fact that I had burst lips made everything even much
worse?
...IBM (Big Blue) made a loss of almost 5 billion US$ over 1992?
...in 1991 their loss was already about 2 billion US$, so it
seems that MS-DOS is perhaps getting less popular?
...this is most excellent news?
...Thomas Sandberg (of S.O.T.E. who've also done the picture in
this issue) supplied us with all the passwords to Eclipse's
puzzle game "Stone Age"?
...they are the following...

Force, has left the scene?
...he will not switch to another computer, not even the Falcon?
...he (quote) felt he had wasted a lot of years as a computer
nerd and feels there is no sense in demo coding when there is
someone who loves you?

Volume 8 Issue 2?
See you then!
