Whereas this column usually only features heavy news, this time
it also contains the outcome of a nice interesting little poll
that was conducted on Internet some time ago. Read it and, well,
weep (or something).
- HARD SHIT -----------------------------------------------------
Rush will do a "20th anniversary" marathon world tour starting
in January 1995. This tour will have an "evening with Rush"
character, where they'll have no support and act and play for
three hours each night. Their "Counterparts" tour ended in
Toronto on last May 7th, and it looks like their forthcoming
album might not be a live album after all. According to Alex
Lifeson, they are "bitten by the recording bug". It should be
released in the summer of 1995, though it is already mentioned
with a release date in February. The live album is now probably
on the back burner.
Peaceville do have a tendency to throw around their release
schedule once in a while. It currently holds the following
releases, with the first not to be expected until January 1995:
Anathema's "Rise Pantheon Dreams" (delayed from September '94,
the Anathema FC claims it'll even be April '95 by the time it's
released) and Kong's "Cerumen in Verse" (also delayed - track
list "Results", "Hoover", "Herk", "Prick", "Ditch", "Arab Loop",
"Bump" and "Perculator") will be released in January. February
will see Autopsy's "Shitfun" (delayed from October '94),
"Peaceville 'V' Compilation" and Drug Free America's 2nd album
(delayed from August '94!). My Dying Bride fans will have to wait
until March, when their 3rd full-length album should be released,
together with Vital Remains' "The Last Supper", a mini CD of
Tekton Motor Corporation remixes and At The Gates' fourth album.
April will see the release of Darkthrone's "Caravans to Empire
Algol" (which has been recorded already), and after that no
releases have been planned until September, when the My Dying
Bride "EP's CD" (sic) will be released. The Anathema EP
"Pentecost III" has been delayed to early 1995.
It should be noted that the Collector's Club singles (CC 7") are
only available to Collector's Club members! Also, the "Unholy
Black Metal" box by Darkthrone won't happen at all (or at least
not for a while).
Paradise Lost will be recording their new album in January and
February, and it is scheduled for release by Music For Nations in
May. Titles include "Masters of Misrule", "Enchantment", "Hands
of Reason", "Forever Failure" and "Draconian Times". "Draconian
Times" will also be the name of the album. As you probably know
by now, their drummer, Matt Archer, has left the band due to
"musical differences".
The fan club, "The Painless", is finally up and running.
Membership costs £10 for which you'll get an interesting welcome
package and four quarterly newsletters. The address to write to
is P.O. Box 411, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD6 2LQ, UK.
Joe Satriani is not the new permanent guitar player in Deep
Purple. In October, Steve Morse toured with Deep Purple through
New Zealand and Australia. He will also be a guest only.
The forthcoming Faith No More album has been delayed to January
1995.
Dream Theater have parted with keyboard man Kevin Moore over
musical differences. A replacement was said to have been found in
ex-Malmsteen and ex-Dio keyboard virtuoso Jens Johansson, but
later rumours insist on a rather more unknown guy called Jordan
Rudess.
Ozzy Osbourne's next album should be released middle 1995. Other
musicians on the album include Steve Vai, Bob Daisley and Deen
Castronovo.
Holy Records will release some interesting material in the near
future. They have signed three new bands, Tristitia (from
Sweden), Phlebotomy (from Greece) and Serenity (from the UK), the
latter of which will release their debut album, "And Then Came
Silence", in January 1995. Tristitia's album, "One With
Darkness", will be released in March 1995, and Phlebotomy will
release their album in June 1995. Nightfall have extended their
contract for two more albums, the first of which will be released
in September 1995. A limited edition picture EP by the name of
"Eon's Aura" will be released in December 1994. Next year will
also see new albums from Godsend (delayed until autumn 1995) and
brilliant Greeks Septic Flesh (May).
There is now an Anathema fan club. The address is P.O. Box 666,
Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD1 4YS, United Kingdom. Send SAE
in the UK or 2 IRCs/US$ 1 to them for info. A phone/fax number is
+44-(0)484-547224.
Living Colour will release their new album in January. Title, as
of yet, is unknown.
The Yngwie Malmsteen video recorded live at Budo Kan, Japan,
earlier this year, has been released in Japan in October. It will
be released in the rest of the world by the end of January 1995.
The forthcoming and frightfully delayed Van Halen album, called
"Balance", will be released on January 23rd.

HARDROCK POLL
One of the best Internet mailing lists, Phil's "Hardrock Mailing
List", recently did a hardrock survey. I'd like to share with you
the more interesting of the outcomes, showing you what people
think about hardrock at the moment. The remarks in-between are
Phil's.
Best Hardrock Artists

You should see the list of bands people voted for. It was
absolutely unreal. I made the cut-off at 30 points, so every
artist receiving more than 30 points is listed.

Best New Hardrock Arists
------------------------
I was amazed at how many people think there hasn't been a single
good new band in the last 2 years. Personally, I had a tough
time choosing less than about 20, but that's just me, I suppose.
Here's your list, including what I found to be a number of
surprises.
1. Candlebox 47
2. Stone Temple Pilots 30
3. Collective Soul 24
Offspring 24
4. Pride & Glory 20
5. Arcade 16
6. Fight 14

Michael Sweet 8
Sweetwater 8
Ugly Kid Joe 8
Wildside 8
Worst Hardrock Artists
----------------------
This came out pretty much how I figured: an almost equal mix of
"glam"/commercial artists and "grunge"/alternative artists. Some
of you have quite strong feelings about this, but I couldn't give
points to "all glam bands" or "any alternative band" like several
people wanted.
1. Poison 65
2. Guns 'n' Roses 45
3. Pearl Jam 37.3
4. Nirvana 29.3
5. Bon Jovi 29
6. Motley Crue 28
7. Stone Temple Pilots 26.3
8. Warrant 25
9. Jackyl 19
10. Primus 13
Next "Big Success"
------------------
Whole slew of answers here, and very few multiple votes. Here's
how it looked:
Three votes: Savatage
Saigon Kick
Black Happy
Dream Theater
Two votes: Gary Hoey
Collective Soul
One vote: Too many to list. Everything from various local
acts to the Offspring, Glenn Hughes, I Mother Earth,
Blue Murder, Eric Johnson, House of Lords, Galactic
Cowboys, Type O Negative, Mr. Reality, and Tool.
Best hardrock live acts
-----------------------
This got messy because some people voted for opening
act/headliner combinations, rather than single bands. I did my
best to sort it all out.
1. Queensryche 62
2. Metallica 58
3. Rush 46
4. Def Leppard 41
5. Van Halen 40
6. Aerosmith 37
7. Dream Theater 33
8. Motley Crue 30.5
9. Iron Maiden 28
10. Kiss 25
11. Guns 'n' Roses 23
12. Extreme 17.5
13. Scorpions 17
14. AC/DC 16
Black Sabbath 16
15. Lillian Axe 15
Best hardrock guitarists
------------------------
No contest here, it was never really all that close.
1. Eddie Van Halen 103 Van Halen
2. Steve Vai 58 Solo, Vai
3. Yngwie Malmsteen 56 Solo
4. Joe Satriani 46 Solo
5. Slash 42 Guns 'n' Roses
6. George Lynch 41 Dokken, Lynch Mob, solo
John Petrucci 41 Dream Theater
7. Nuno Bettencourt 40 Extreme
8. Ritchie Blackmore 28 Rainbow, Deep Purple
9. Kirk Hammett 19 Metallica
10. Tony Iommi 18 Black Sabbath
Joe Perry 18 Aerosmith
11. Chris Degarmo 17.5 Queensryche
12. Jimi Hendrix 16 Solo
Alex Lifeson 16 Rush
Best hardrock vocalists
-----------------------
Talk about a blowout...
1. Geoff Tate 132 Queensryche
2. James Labrie 45 Dream Theater
3. Ronny James Dio 37 Dio
4. Axl Rose 28 Guns 'n' Roses
Steven Tyler 28 Aerosmith
5. Sebastian Back 25.5 Skid Row
6. Rob Halford 25 Judas Priest, Fight

Bruce Dickinson 23 Iron Maiden, solo
Joe Elliot 23 Def Leppard
8. Ozzy Osbourne 21 Solo, Black Sabbath
9. James Hetfield 20 Metallica
10. Eddie Vedder 19 Pearl Jam
11. Don Dokken 17.5 Dokken, Solo
12. Gary Cherone 17 Extreme
Robert Plant 17 Led Zeppelin, Solo
Axl Rose fourth place?! You've *got* to be kiddin'. I think
everybody can agree that the mean just doesn't even sing, more
sortof squeals.
Best hardrock drummers
----------------------
Another romp...
1. Neil Peart 127 Rush
2. Mike Portnoy 75 Dream Theater
3. Lars Ulrich 72 Metallica
4. Scott Rockenfield 51 Queensryche
5. Alex Van Halen 36 Van Halen

7. Tommy Lee 23 Motley Crue
8. Cozy Powell 20 Rainbow, Whitesnake
9. Joey Kramer 17.5 Aerosmith
10. Rick Allen 17 Def Leppard
Nicko McBrain 17 Iron Maiden
I am a big Metallica fan but Lars Ulrich is a *crap* drummer who
indulges in too much fills and shit. Scott is *way* better than
Lars. Well...
Best hardrock bassist
---------------------
The closest race of the five of the "best musician" questions.
1. Steve Harris 60 Iron Maiden
2. Geddy Lee 59 Rush
3. Billy Sheehan 56 Mr. Big, Talas
4. Stu Hamm 37 Joe Satriani, Solo
5. Jason Newsted 33 Metallica
6. Geezer Butler 25 Black Sabbath
7. Cliff Burton 23 Metallica
8. Les Claypool 19 Primus
9. Nikki Sixx 18 Motley Crue
10. Gene Simmons 16 Kiss
I guess the people who didn't vote for Stuart Hamm never
actually saw him do his 'thing' live. Otherwise he'd surely have
ended up number 1. And Jason is OK, but how he could ever end up
higher than Cliff is a mystery to me.
The game commences...for the usual fee...plus expenses...
Best hardrock keyboardists
--------------------------
Predictably, most people left this blank.
1. Kevin Moore 75 Dream Theater
2. Jens Johansson 47 Yngwie Malmsteen
3. David Bryan 40 Bon Jovi
4. Rick Wakeman 38 Yes
5. Jon Lord 37 Deep Purple
6. Jon Oliva 19 Savatage
7. Dizzy Reed 13 Guns 'n' Roses
8. Geoff Nichols 11 Black Sabbath
Eddie Van Halen 11 Van Halen
Bands pushing the boundaries of hardrock the most
-------------------------------------------------
Progressive bands clean up.
1. Queensryche 76
2. Dream Theater 73
3. Fates Warning 20
4. Rush 17
5. Extreme 15
Savatage 15
6. Alice in Chains 11.5
7. Aerosmith 9
8. Nine Inch Nails 8
Primus 8
Soundgarden 8
Bands that should call it quits
-------------------------------
This was predicatable...people who liked more progressive or
alternative artists voted for "glam" or more commercial hardrock
artists, while fans of the "glam" or commercial artists voted for
alternative or "grunge" bands. Though some people ranked the
artists, I chose to just count votes. Here are the "winners"
(not a terribly flattering honor, I must admit) and the number of
people who voted that they should pack it in.
1. Motley Crue 15
2. Guns 'n' Roses 11
3. Aerosmith 10
Rolling Stones 10
4. Poison 9
5. Van Halen 6
6. Deep Purple 5
7. Black Sabbath 4
Vince Neil 4
Nirvana 4 (I think these votes were a tad harsh)
Robert Plant 4
Warrant 4
Van Halen?! Strange...
So far these poll results. Thanks, Phil, even though I never did
get around to asking you permission for re-use of these results
(not that you'd ever find out).
