REPORT FROM THE ROSKILDE FESTIVAL
by Karl Anders 0ygard
On a lone asteroid Pareezte sat slumped over his computer
enhancing telescope. It was focused on the blue planet also known
as Tellus, more correctly at a little place in Denmark called
Roskilde. Pareezte, knowing little about this, had dubbed the
place Pareez. Since this was his discovery, he had given it part
of his name and he had had a good feeling about it, as he was
having a good feeling about what he was looking at now.
The three earlier years that he had told the professors about
his theories, they had laughed at him, calling it a mere
incident. This was the seventh time that he had witnessed this
gathering, and he was certain now that his theories were correct.
Every year, at the same date, close to 100,000 of these funny
little creatures gathered at the exactly same place. For four or
five days they would live and sleep on a small area, mark their
territories thoroughly and emit loud noises (none of which
Pareezte could figure out).
"For what purpose?" he asked himself aloud. Could it be some
kind of ritual, some worshipping of a god? He was rather amused
by that. It was millennia since his beautiful green people had
stopped worshipping gods. The god wouldn't help them anyway - the
gods would just excuse themselves telling them what a hard time
they had had at work that particular day, and tell them, "maybe
some other time." Well, that wouldn't help the silly little
buggers. Anyway, he wasn't sure that was what the pink little
critters were doing down there. Could it be that they were
mating? He would have to think about that later. The professors
would see what they he seen all along and would have to admit
what a discovery he had made. And then: Fame and fortune and
women. Pareezte found himself laughing loudly.
But in the meanwhile, he was really looking forward to the
lightfestival at Riskolde next week. How many would come this
year? One million? Two?
*****
The 23rd Roskilde festival was held 30 June, 1, 2, 3 July. I
originally intended to go, but found myself rather unprepared for
this ordeal, as the people I originally intended to go with
skipped out. To my luck I discovered that some partners in crime
(guys from work, actually) were going to the festival and even
had a spare seat, just twelve hours before they were leaving for
Denmark.
This year the festival hosted big names like Aerosmith, Peter
Gabriel, George Clinton and ZZ Top, to mention just a few. I
hadn't been to the festival before, so I was not really sure what
to expect (the prospect of some sun seemed so unreal to me that I
even forgot to bring some sunblock - we're not used to these
things in cold Norway).
The trip down was somewhat disturbing - it was raining rather
heavily, and in my mind I was living out 4 days of stomping
around in mud up to my knees. On the ferry over to Denmark, the
clouds lighted up a bit, and with high spirits we impressed
ourselves with some self-made songs of love, passion and a few
other things as well.
Arriving at Roskilde the sky was as blue as... hmm, the sky was
blue. After ten cramped hours in the car walking was not easy, so
we promptly crawled into the closest store and bought two crates
of beer. After some short research we rediscovered how to walk,
and thus moved over to the camping site. By going to Roskilde a
day early we had expected to at least get to camp somewhere near
the festival site. By the looks of things civilization seemed to
have hit Roskilde more than a week earlier. Anyhow, we had to
camp in the far corner of the camping site, which brought us more
than a kilometre away from the parking spot. The prospect of
carrying what now seemed to be a ton of sleeping bags, tents and
stuff, plus our two freshly obtained crates of beer didn't appeal
to us, so we made our trip a bit lighter by emptying one of the
crates of beer.
A few hours later decisions had been made, our home for the
coming five days had been put up and I was completely exhausted.
Supposedly, there should be at least three metres between tents,
but this didn't seem to bother people very much. Some places
tents were mostly on top of each other, and generally there was
no more than half a metre between tents.
The evening went by without any great surprises and I woke up
the next morning, only to discover that I had gone to sleep in a
nest of some kind of mobile monsters with huge scissorlike things
attached to their fronts. To my great relief and satisfaction
they weren't more than about 1 cm. long and could be stomped out
pretty easily.
The first day went mostly into getting things in order and going
on safaris around the camping site (quite a thrill at times). The
festival site didn't open until 17 pm that day, so we had some
spare time.
I spent some time reading about the artists that were going to
play and made some mental notes on which bands to listen to. The
programme for the thursday looked approximately like this:

I have intentionally left out the Cabaret Stage, which I found
less interesting. Besides, no actual bands played there - rather,
entertainers gave shows there.
I went to listen to Rage Against The Machine, Ben Harper, Gypsy
Jam, Aerosmith and Biosphere. At the Aerosmith concert I made the
rather fatal decicion of getting as far in the front as I could -
- I realized after only five minutes of trying to get all the way
in the front what a lousy idea this had been from the beginning.
I was then about five meters away from the stage getting mostly
squeezed and stomped to death for a band that I didn't really
like in the first place. I spent most of the rest of the concert
trying to get back out of the crowd. Very entertaining!
By the second morning the camping site had gotten rather messy.
In order to wake up, we made a joint effort of reducing the
number of insect species on planet earth. Not really succeeding
in killing the fierce scissor monsters we went into town to get a
shower.
The bandlist for the Friday looked somewhat like this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
This second day I went to listen to Me'Shell Ndege Ocello,
Sepultura, Bjork, Peter Gabriel, No Means No and Angelique Kidjo.
I was going to go to Underworld and Clawfinger as well, but I was
busy lying with my feet up a wall when Underworld went on stage,
and Clawfinger was easily audible from our camp site. Bjork was
great, and Peter Gabriel put on a fabulous performance, probably
the best concert at the festival this year (also, Angelique Kidjo
stepped in on `Don't give up').
I was told that there were at least 85000 people at the festival
- I wouldn't doubt that for a second; there were people
everywhere you turned and everywhere you looked. Despite the fact
that there were 80K+ freaked out, party-hungry and beer-drinking
maniacs present, the festival was astonishingly serene and quiet.
Except for the occasional spilling of beers everyone was happy
(or at least thought they were so) and went around and were
nice(ish) to each other. Pissed off with all this niceness I made
up my mind to put people's patience to test and lay down to rest
in the middle of the road. That might not sound like a great
idea, but except from that it was somewhat dirty, nobody stepped
on me and I got my rest.
Coming back to our tents that night brought us the arguable
pleasure of having parts of our luggage stolen. Some guys must
accidentally have gone into our other tent and mistaken two of my
friends rucksacks for their own. Fortunately they had not
mistaken my luggage for theirs as well, so I still had some clean
underwear to spare.
The third morning I cannot make out. Either nothing happened, or
something nasty happened to my short-term memory.
Standing by the fence pissing, together with some fifteen other
guys and a few girls as well, I couldn't help but thinking 'Is
this really what our civilization has come to?' That was quite
beyond my grasp at that particular moment so after a few idle
moments, I figured I didn't really care and went back to a lot
more music. Because, if there was one thing that the festival had
to offer except beer and lightly dressed girls, it was music:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I went to listen to Rollins Band, George Clinton, Jah Wobble &
The Invaders of the Heart, YM-Stammen, Tab Two and Transglobal
Underground (what about the ultimately fantabulous Mercyful Fate?
ED.). Tab Two was perhaps my greatest surprise - I just happened
to catch a few notes of what they had dubbed Hip Jazz and was
immediately hooked. Them being just two, drum rythms were
playback (but none the less funky), one played trumpet and some
kind of synth trumpet while the other gave his bass a hard time.
It was all very weird, but the crowd loved it (believe it or not
- the synth trumpet and the way it was played brought my mind on
to the old C-64 SID music).
By the fourth day the entire camping area was smelling rankly of
piss an leaning on anything vertical was either impossible or at
least very unhygienic. After three days of dust and hot sun and
not having a shower, I blended in perfectly.
The Roskilde festival (and similar festivals) has gone a long
way from where it started out in 1971; a gathering of hippies and
the equally minded - those expecting to see topless girls and
couples performing coitus in the streets are in for a nasty
surprise. True enough, there's still a fair amount of hash and
lighter drugs about, but apart from that everything is calm and
serene. Girls wear fancy underwear and guys drive here in daddys
Mercedeses. Not much left of the hippie spirit there, that is.
Anyway, music:

This last day I caught hold of Hedningarna, Accept, Maceo Parker
& Roots revisited, ZZ Top, Babes in Toyland and eventually The
Levellers (I went to a lot more concerts as well, but these were
the ones I actually stopped and listened to).
Some friends of mine figured they'd test security at the
festival site, so they brought a huge oil tank out past the
guards and back to our tent (I guess the guards hadn't been given
instructions to stop people carrying oil tanks out from the
festival site). Since the festival officially now was over, we
figured we could have our own concert. With a few sticks and
broken chairs we managed to pull off a little drum orchestra, and
half an hour later "The Norwegian Experience" had attracted some
twenty other people. All was invited to play and three hours and
one hell of a lot of noise later we set the oil tank on fire. A
worthy rounding off of the Roskilde festival.
*****
How to have a great time at the Roskilde festival and actually
get away with it:
Before
- Bring a lot of party-hungry, music-loving friends
- Bring a tent and a sleeping bag (possibly XL if you expect
company)
- Bring some cash
- Bring a lot of deodorant and similar to cover up for three
days of crawling about in the mud and not getting a shower
- Bring your very coolest "club wear"
- Bring some particularily tough shoes (expect >10km of
walking each day)
While
- Do like everyone else
- Have a great time
- Listen to a lot of music
After
- Gather together whatever you think is yours and go home
*****
Rating:
Very exhausting, very dirty, lots of people, cool music and also
great fun.
This year's festival: 9 out of 10.
