MUSIC REVIEWS: THE DEMO DEPARTMENT
by Richard Karsmakers
This issue contains an all-time high of CD reviews, but the demo
department hasn't suffered because of it, as you can see below.
Let's stop beating around the bush and get crackin'.
Bleed - Womb
Bleed, the demo of which was sent to me by Concrete Records'
Andreas Reissnauer, is said to be a mixture of Fear Factory and
Obituary. I wouldn't know, because I am not at all familiar with
the first of these bands. However, the result surely is pleasing
to the heavy metal ear. Drums have been produced excellently
(sound a lot like Pantera, actually), the singer's growl is nice
and heavy and, indeed, there's a fair bit of Obituary to be
found. I think any death metal lover will certainly dig this
band. For 28 minutes the band unleashed on your ears some great
and aggressive songs. Quite worth while.
This demo is available for DM 15,- (incl. p&p) at Concrete
Records, P.O. Box 1421, D-77845, Achern, Germany.
Dissonance - Sleepless Dead
Dissonance, a doom metal band from Lithuania, I guess has a good
future ahead of it if only they'll get discovered. Their music is
a lot like My Dying Bride or Anathema, but with less use of
violins (if it all). Some passages have hints of Nightfall or
Septic Flesh clinging to them, and production may not be good
enough to use on a CD but gets the music across amply. If you
like atmospheric metal, not too fast but really nice, you
probably won't be disappointed by this.
This demo, 26 minutes of music repeated on each of the tape
sides, is available by sending US$ 10 to Ramunas Abromaitis, P.O.
Box 2829, Central Post Office, 2000 Vilnius, Lithuania. It
contains four songs plus a kind of bonus track, an older version
of the last of the four songs, "Leaving the Body".
Hörnqvist Project - A Journey Through Time And Space
A very old demo, this one, dating back as far as 1991, but I
received it only recently and I think it's flippin' excellent. As
opposed to all other sortof death-metal oriented demos that are
reviewed here, this is a guitar hero tape. The band consists of
brothers (?) Jonas (guitar, bass and keyboard) and Magnus (drums
and percussion), playing a gamut of many guitar styles (electric
as well as some acoustic) in which guitarists can be
distinguished the likes of Cyril Whistler, Greg Howe, Al DiMeola,
Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore and probably many
more that I am not acquainted with sufficiently.
Many of the songs are pretty happy in the way most Shrapnel
guitarists are (particularly Greg Howe, Joey Tafolla), but there
are jazzy bits and heavier bits as well ("Mixed Emotions" has all
of them in one song, quite appropriately), and the unbelievably
excellent "Unknown Journey" seems an almost direct tribute to
several guitarists (mostly Malmsteen) and some more classical
composers. "A Tear of Love (To You)" and "Memories of You" are
ballads that probably hold profound meanings for the musicians
but are less impressive than the other songs (which does not mean
to say they're crap because I for one would probably never be
able to play them).
I don't like the cover much, but that isn't as important as the
music contained on this most excellent guitar tape. The demo got
sent to me by Jonas Hörnqvist himself, not as a review copy. I
lack the order details, but I expect you can acquire it at Jonas'
address: Hasselbackevägen 16, 44444 Stenungsund, Sweden. Try
asking first, sending an IRC for reply, then send the money he
needs if the demo is still available. I don't think you can
possibly be disappointed if you're into guitar music! I think
it's a disgrace that this band hasn't yet been discovered by
labels the likes of Shrapnel or Relativity!
SFD - Destruction of the Youth
The second band of which I received a copy from Concrete
Records' Andreas Reissnauer is SFD, with their demo "Destruction
of the Youth" (which I think might be a questionable English
phrase). This Australian thrash metal band has released a 19
minute demo containing four songs that are generally OK but not
produced too excellently. The vocals are a bit like Metal Church
but less heavy, and particularly the drums could have been mixed
much clearer. The compositions have good moments and especially
the intrio to "The Saviour" appealed rather a lot to me. As the
demo progresses the songs seem to get better, but on a whole the
guitar solos, for example, remain a bit messy.
This demo is available for DM 15,- (incl. p&p) at Concrete
Records, P.O. Box 1421, D-77845, Achern, Germany.
Spiritual Ceremony - Vision
A massive 56 minutes is the total length of 7 songs on Spiritual
Ceremony's "Vision" demo. This Italian band is actually quite
good, using atmospheric compositions with keyboards and clever
use of samples, but the major drawback is the production. Solo
guitar bits sound too distorted, and very often the whole
recording sounds as if recorded on one of those auto-record-level
devices - when the drums are suddenly loud the whole background
goes softer, and when the instruments get softer record level
automatically cranks everything up. This is a real shame, as this
could easily have been the best demo this time if only the
production had been near-commercial.
Still, on account of its incredible value for money and the
actually good music, you may want to get this demo anyway. The
address to send the required US$ 10 to is Simone Salvatori (is
that a girl on those unbelievably deep growly vocals?!), P.
Teodosio 15, I-00145 Roma, Italy.
Warhate - Action & Attitude
Warhate is a Brazilian band that started in April 1987. Last
year they released their "Action & Attitude" demo. Production is
loud, especially the bass drum. Sometimes the vocals are barely
discernible. Composition are pretty straightforward thrash metal,
not bad at all but not too special either. The music made me
think of old Venom, only a bit faster and with different vocals,
which sound like Biohazard and old Sepultura.
The demo tape also contains the "Biological Decimate" 1991 7"
single (which is produced a lot louder, especially the bass, and
which sounds a lot like old Destruction) and their first "Thrash
Invasion" 1988 demo (which is really aggressive, rough, fast,
also sounds like early Destruction/Slayer and possibly a tad
better than the new material, ending with a nicely thrashy "Ace
of Spades" cover).
This 50 (!) minute tape can be obtained by sending US$ 10 to
Underground Union, Cx Postal 12, Centro, STO, André SP, CEP
090001-970 Brasil.
